MATT SMITH & THE COWBOY SPANKERS
THE FLATIRON GREENSBORO

Matt Smith & The Cowboy Spankers bring their signature blend of grit and grace to the Flatiron stage in Greensboro on Sunday, May 25th for a special matinee performance beginning at 2 PM. Drawing from a wide spectrum of rock and folk influences, the trio channels the heavy energy of Motörhead and Black Sabbath alongside the rich storytelling traditions of Doc Watson and Townes Van Zandt.
MATT SMITH & THE COWBOY SPANKERS Punchline
Comprised of former and current members of influential acts such as Subculture, The Darnell Woodies, William and The Texas Starlight, The Johnsons, Lavamouth, and Lords of Mace, the group offers a sound as dynamic as it is rooted—one equally appealing to fans of Ezra Pound and Muddy Waters.

BEHIND THE BAND
Subculture, formed in the early 1980s by high school friends Matt Smith (guitar/vocals) and Chris Phillips (drums), became a potent force in the hardcore scene. Their influence extended beyond that scene, even earning a humorous shoutout from Fat Mike of NOFX: “Subculture were one of the only hardcore bands that blew NOFX off the stage… Not only that… but they were the ones that named me Fat Mike! Jerks!

The Johnsons were fielding offers during the Americana revival of the 90s—remember “y’allternative”?—after being featured in Billboard Magazine's 'Rising New Artists' section. Their Mammoth/Atlantic record deal died with the Disney buyout, a shake-up that left many artists, including fellow local favorites The Squirrel Nut Zippers, struggling in its wake.

Catch it all on Sunday, May 25th, from 2–6 PM at The Flatiron in Greensboro, NC. All ages are welcome.
